Stuff like this reminds me that not only are Elephants immensely intelligent and deeply social, they also generally consider humans to be legitimately “cute/adorable” in the same way we do for dogs or cats.

This playful elephant is likely acting accordingly.

Elephant scientist testing whether humans understand object permanence.

July 25, 2023 - Striking stuntman Mike Massa walks in the SAG-AFTRA picket line while on fire. [video]

So, so, so badass.  What a chillingly powerful message this sends.  People have been lighting themselves on fire as a form of protest for centuries, but this might be the first time it’s been done by a professional who knows what he’s doing while under the supervision of professionals who know what they’re doing.

not as an act of self-destruction but as a display of skill

I’m in awe

the world is so inhospitable to quiet girls

did an internship recently and got so much positive feedback for my work until one of my supervisors told my manager that while i did the tasks perfectly i was ‘a bit quiet’ … it was my only negative feedback and still it was so demoralising because i felt like i had pushed myself to be way more chatty than i am naturally. STILL i was ‘too quiet’.

not even a customer facing role btw, i had no interaction with the public. it wasn’t a criticism of my work; it was of my personality.

we went for an interview for a job at a library once and part of the feedback when we didn’t get the job was “they were too quiet” and we were like

you interviewed us in a library

I had this problem Constantly in my pre-university years. I was quiet as mouse. I was too soft-spoken. I needed to put myself forward more. I was harassed over this at work and school.

Then in my senior year I had an ex drill Sargent as my debate coach and model UN supervisor. our fearless ex-drill Sargent was The most feared and favorite teacher at the school and a very strange 65-70 yo Boston irish-man.

That delightful, mean, curmudgeon old man Should have been the drama teacher. Instead he taught me how to mask and emote solely for the purpose of convincing people to do my bidding.

There are a few folks from my class who went immediately into politics and one day I’m sure they will rule Washington in an iron fist. But for me a public facing persona that will not crack under pressure and can project and emote literally changed the trajectory of my life.

I know everyone says it’s best to just stick to “said” as a dialogue tag bc it disappears and that’s true and I mostly do but I want to take a moment for my all-time favorite dialogue tag, “lied.” Absolutely nothing hits like “‘I’m here to help,’ he lied.” NOTHING.
